Drunk driving accusations abound in Indiana over holiday

Independence Day weekend is often considered by many to be one of the most dangerous times of year to travel by motor vehicle. Approximately 32 motorists were arrested in Indiana alone, over a recent national holiday weekend. Many of those arrested are now slated to face drunk driving charges in court.

In 2015, Indiana police officers were called to respond to more than 950 automobile collisions throughout the state. Many of those crashes were apparently alcohol-related. Indiana authorities recently stated that they hope increased patrols and DUI checkpoints during holidays will help lower incidents of drunk driving accidents this year. A police captain suggested that the lower a person's blood alcohol content is, the less likelihood that he or she will get behind the wheel of a car to drive. It seems the more a person imbibes, the more likely a decision to drink and drive will be made.

Merely being accused of driving under the influence of alcohol does not mean that a conviction will be handed down in court. Some people who have been accused of drunk driving are later found innocent of all charges against them. Such positive outcomes are often obtained through experienced and aggressive criminal defense assistance.

If an Indiana motorist is charged with drunk driving, retaining immediate guidance from a criminal lawyer is advised. Drunk driving charges are considered criminal infractions, not traffic-related offenses. The penalties incurred if convicted can be quite severe, often including time behind bars, loss of driving privileges and substantial monetary fines. Therefore, anyone facing such charges will want to take advantage of all available resources and options to minimize the potential negative impact of the situation.
