Occupants were outside vehicle in suspected drunk driving case

An incident occurred recently in Indiana that resulted in several fatalities. There seems to have been extenuating circumstances involved in the alleged drunk driving accident. One man is now being held on $300,000 bond for his alleged role in the situation.

Apparently, a passenger van full of university students had undergone some sort of vehicle problem moments before the crash. The van had been stopped partially off the road, closest to the median. Seven occupants from the vehicle were reportedly standing outside the van at the time of the collision.

It seems that four of the van occupants were standing near the driver's side of the vehicle. Three others were near the back. At some point, another van that was traveling northbound is said to have veered off the road and collided with the four persons near the front of the other van.

Three people died at the scene. Two other persons, including the 26-year-old driver of the second van, were taken to a nearby hospital for care. That driver now faces several charges related to drunk driving and is being held in a county jail in Indiana. In a similar situation, a criminal defense attorney can investigate the surrounding circumstances of an accident to determine if there are grounds to challenge any portion of the charges against a defendant; doing so may potentially lead to a lessening of charges or, in some cases, a full dismissal. In any event, an attorney can make certain that the exact charges filed are appropriate to the situation.
